Activities for Kids

In January 2007, the City of Greater Bendigo received worldwide recognition from UNICEF as Australia’s first Child Friendly City. There are heaps of activities on the council’s website, such as: Get Active, Explore the CityGet Creative, Back to Nature and What’s on in Bendigo.

There are other local organisations with activities especially for children:

Bendigo Family Nature Club

Bendigo Art Gallery
Gallery Giggles – a morning of stories, songs and conversation all around art.
For children 5 years and under on the first Thursday each month during school term. Mums, Dads and carers do need to stay and enjoy the fun.

Bendigo Family Nature Club  
Every third Sunday of the month connect with our natural world guided by experienced naturalists with the Bendigo Family Nature Club. Presented in partnership with the Bendigo Sustainability Group and the Bendigo Field Naturalists. Registration essential.

Bendigo Library
Goldfields Libraries hosts a wide range of free children’s activities during the school term throughout the year, as well as special activities in the school holidays.

Storytime
Read-aloud stories, songs, finger plays, action rhymes and a craft activity to suit children aged 3-5 years and their parents/caregivers.

Toddler Time  
Simple stories, finger plays, songs and rhymes for 0 to 2 year olds. At toddler time you and your child will have fun and learn together from your positive role modelling of interest and participation.

Discovery Science & Technology Centre 5444 4400

Over 100 fascinating exhibits to explore, including a planetarium, vertical slide, kaleidescope and The Lab.
Curious Kids (for ages 3-5) is held at 11am on the first & third Monday of each month during school terms.
Open daily from 10am-4pm. (Closed Christmas Day and February).

Kelly Sports
Providing kids with an opportunity to participate in sports and physical activities before/after school and lunchtimes. Sports themed kids parties, holiday programs, specialised sports clinics. They even have programs for toddlers (2.5-3.5 years).

The only indoor pool is at the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre in Eaglehawk)

Tom Tweed Stadium, Mundy Street
A fun and educational ‘movement program’ for crawlers to 5 year olds with their parent/carer offered as structured play (term enrollments only) or casual sessions at $5.

Indoor Play Centres
When it’s cold and rainy in Bendigo (not very often, mind you), there are a number of options to choose from.

Bendigo Social Little Butterflies
A not-for-profit community group run by parents to share information about events in and around Bendigo. Follow them on Facebook for more up-to-date info.
