Proceeds from the event will go to provide the Ophthalmology department at the Royal Childrens Hospital with a Play Therapist once a month for the ‘Eye Days’ – the target is $6,000 to facilitate this.
On ‘Eye Days’ children (often 1-5 years) are not able to drink or eat from midnight, travelling to Melbourne to sit in a room with a lot of other children in the same predicament. They are given drops to dilate their eyes, which effectively make them blind for 8-12 hours, then put under anesthetic to check for further tumors. For children, these days are horrible and very stressful for the parents as well.
A Play Therapist would make these days so much easier, providing a positive experience for the children. You can imagine a room full of hungry, thirsty, tired, blind 1-5 year olds and their parents already under enough pressure going through the stresses of cancer.
