We’re lucky to live in a city where there’s always something on. Whether you’ve just moved to Bendigo, you’re a local looking to connect, or simply looking for something new to try, Bendigo has something for you.
There are a tonne of benefits of having a hobby. It can help to reduce stress, improve performance at work, improve your level of patience, and it’s a great way to learn and experience new things. Here are a few hobbies that you can try.
Bust a move
iDance Bendigo offers some awesome classes for any level of dance. You can learn Ballroom, Salsa, Street Latin and Dance Fitness. There are classes to suit kids and adults, with beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and a social class if you’re looking to meet others.
Rock your socks off
Try your hand (or feet) at rock’n roll dancing with Bendigo Jailhouse Rockers. There’s nothing better than a bit of rock’n roll to get you grooving. You can get lessons in Freestyle and 4 Step, and there are major dances and a major three day festival held each year – sounds like fun to me!
Sing a tune
For those who absolutely love singing, the Gorgeous Voice Choir might be for you! Running on the principle that everyone can sing and no one is excluded, it’s a great group for singers at any level. Check it out here.
Bendigo Theatre Company also runs the B Sharp Chorus – no auditions and no experience required. It’s free for BTC members, you can read more about it here.
Get on a roll
Head to the Open Day for Dragon City Roller Derby. On Sunday 20th January you can find out all the info about what it’s like to be part of a roller derby team. The Open Day is for everyone, from those who’ve always wanted to try roller derby, to veterans who’ve had some time off and want to get back onto the skates.
Run away to the circus
Well, we’re not quite ‘running away’ here. Z fit Studios will teach you how to become a circus performer, right here in Bendigo! You can learn skills like tumbling, dance trapeze, aerial tricks, how to use silks, hoops and more. You can also try your first class for free – a great activity for the young and the young at heart.
Imagine, design and build with LEGO
An awesome initiative created by people who enjoy seeing what they can build with LEGO. Open to anyone and suited to those who love creativity and design. This is an awesome way to get to know local people who have a similar interest in what you do. Find them here or on Facebook under Bendigo Area LEGO Designers.
Get your community spirit on
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and become more involved in your community. Check out the Bendigo Volunteer Centre Resource Centre – they can help connect you to local volunteer organisations.
Fitness for free
Exercise is a great hobby to have and we’re lucky to have so many great locations to run or stroll around; Kennington Reservoir, Lake Weeroona and Crusoe Reservoir come to mind. If you want to challenge yourself, check out Bendigo Parkrun; race against the clock each week and try to beat your time.
Ten Pin Win
Bendigo Bowling League introduces handicaps so you can play alongside the pro’s no matter what level you’re at. Night leagues, day leagues, leagues for juniors and those with special needs – there’s something for everyone. You can also sign up to the Phantom League, where you can bowl at any time that suits you. Find more info here.
We’ve had so many great suggestions for hobbies to try, which highlights that Bendigo has a LOT to offer for those looking to try something new.
